At the seventeenth hour of the race at Le Mans in the LMP2 class, the car of the Polish Europol team is in the lead, driven by Spaniard Albert Costa, but during the previous shift, when his partner Jakub Smichovsky drove, their sports prototype was ahead of Robert Kubica, the Team WRT racer.
Although the yellow-green Oreca has returned to first in class after its next scheduled pit stop, Robert thinks the battle for victory will continue all the way to the very checkered flag.
Robert Kubica: “The fighting is hard, the finish is still a long way off, but it seems the Europol crew has a different tactic, they have a lot of confidence and they have the fastest car. Still, the rivalry will continue until the checkered flag, so we’re still ready to attack.
On the straights their car breaks away from us and I had no choice but to try and attack in the last chicane of the circle but I couldn’t so I had to give back the position.
I understood that I had to take advantage of the traffic situation, I came out of the Tertre Rouge well, much better than Jakub, but still I couldn’t overtake him, although I tried to use the slipstream. Fortunately, there was a hypercar for this and that is why I finally succeeded. Of course I wanted to overtake carefully and try to avoid unnecessary risks. But let’s see how it develops.”
