Max Verstappen believes the FIA has acted wrong by issuing a technical directive aimed at reducing the effects of car throwing as some teams cannot cope with this phenomenon.
During the race in Baku, the cars of these teams were not only subject to strong build-up, called “aerodynamic vibrations” in the federation’s statement, but also constantly hit the bottom of the track on uneven road surfaces. Above all, Mercedes drivers talked about this, who felt very uncomfortable behind the wheel.
After a dialogue with riders in pain and medics ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, the federation has brought to the attention of the teams a new technical guideline, promising to establish an “acceptable vertical oscillation limit”, although the formula by which it will be calculated has not yet been determined.
Max Verstappen criticized this.
“In my opinion, it’s a shame that the rules change again halfway through the season,” the American edition of Racer is quoted as saying by the Red Bull Racing driver. – It’s not even that our team is affected more or less than others. But it shouldn’t be the case that one team complains loudly, and suddenly the rules change as a result.
I think many teams have done their job well and are not faced with this phenomenon, which makes it possible to deal with it. If you raise the ride height, there will be no problems, but you will lose speed. If you can’t design a car well with this phenomenon in mind, it’s your fault, not the rules.
Of course all circuits are different, but I think it is wrong to change them halfway through the season, because of course there are teams that show that it is very possible to drive normally or at least have much less difficulties.
Haas F1 Team Principal Günter Steiner also does not share the federation’s approach, as he believes the new technical directive could affect the balance of power.
“Actually, this phenomenon needs to be studied. Some cars suffer from it quite a bit,” he said. – And there is a solution – you just need to increase the ground clearance. But then the speed decreases, and who wants to go slow? This is similar to the situation, which we can’t remember how many years ago when we had to switch tires in the middle of the season, the same thing is happening now.
When you make some major adjustments, you can completely change the balance of power again. Is it fair? No. If we’re talking about a factor like safety, then this can be addressed too – if it gets too dangerous, all you need to do is increase ground clearance.
As for the measurements that allow you to determine when it becomes unsafe, to find a limit, to find out if you’re crossing this threshold… I don’t even know what penalties can be applied here.”
