Wolff: The track in Canada is worse for our car

Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff commented on the results of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who climbed the podium in Barcelona, the result of a joint effort, noted Mick Schumacher’s work on the Pirelli testing, and also set goals for the Canadian leg of the season.

Toto Wolff: “The result in Spain was a well-deserved reward for the efforts of everyone working at the bases in Brackley and Brixworth, all the specialists who have created a range of technical innovations that we have tested on track. We are happy with how they performed and it gives us a new foundation to build on as we continue to upgrade the chassis.

But at the same time, we should avoid exaggerated expectations. The circuit in Barcelona suited our car and it is foreseeable that our direct rivals will perform better in the next races. The gap to Red Bull is still big and we have to keep working hard to win it back. However, we are ready to take on this challenge.

After the Spanish Grand Prix, Mick Schumacher had his first chance to drive the W14. During the Pirelli tire tests, he adapted well to the car, and he liked this experience. Mick has already become a valuable member of our team, his work on the simulator has been useful and helps us improve, as we saw in Barcelona.

Now Montreal is waiting for us. The Canadian track has long straights and slow corners and we don’t expect it to fit our car as well as the Catalan ring. But whatever pace our machine is actually capable of, the challenge is to achieve the best possible result.

Also on this circuit with its special features, we will be able to get new information about the performance of the W14 and in the future we will use it when finalizing the chassis.”
