It looks like McLaren will continue to work with Mercedes in 2026 as Formula 1 transitions to new power plants…
Andrew Stella, team leader: “It’s great to be a factory team, but it’s almost the same when your partner is a well-known manufacturer. Changing partners during the transition to a new scheme entails a certain amount of risk and in 2026 we want to take up the fight. I don’t want to say, “We need another two years because our project isn’t mature enough.” We want to be in good shape – both in terms of chassis efficiency and with a good powerplant.
If I had to choose, I would choose factory support, but I don’t think this is a fundamental difference that will win you over. Right now our limitations have nothing to do with the power plant, they are systemic in nature – we’ll focus on that. We need to improve the efficiency of the aerodynamics and the handling of the tires. We have an excellent power plant, in our case that is not at the expense of competitiveness.”
