Formula 1 wants to make it more difficult to dominate

Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali wants to make it harder for top teams to dominate permanently. At the same time, he ruled out the possibility of adjusting the regulations during the season to interrupt Red Bull Racing’s winning streak.

Stefano Domenicali: “This approach would be wrong, because we don’t want to be seen as a sport where you can manipulate the result. This is wrong and unfair, so I can’t imagine we’re going to take this approach.

Now there is a difference between one team and the rest. At the same time, there is a very close fight between the rest, and Red Bull did their job brilliantly. We are a meritocracy, so we have to remember that they did a great job. Yes, their advantage over rivals is great, but you need to be careful and not make hasty decisions, because everything in life can change very quickly.

We want this gap of one team to the rest to be as small as possible. I’m sure the rest of the teams are looking for ways to get closer to a tight budget. It will be interesting to see if the development curve of today’s leaders slows down as they previously outperformed others in the short term. The coming months will be interesting.”

Three years later, Formula 1 is going to seriously change the regulations again. Domenicali said one of the goals of these changes is to avoid long-term dominance of one team.

“There have always been cycles in Formula 1 where one team dominated, but after a while that was replaced by others. Our strategic goal is that these cycles become shorter in the future and that all 20 cars, or however many there will be, can really fight each other. This is what I want, both as a representative of the commercial rights holder and as a fan of our sport.”
