Few people know that Gunther Steiner loved to play hockey as a child and especially stood at the gate. It’s been a long time coming, but on Wednesday the 58-year-old Haas F1 boss put on his goalkeeper’s hockey harness for the first time in a long time and took to the ice.
And it was the uniform of the legendary Canadian club Montreal Canadiens. Together with François Dumontier, promoter of the Canadian Grand Prix, he took part in a training session with professional hockey players, although it is clear that this was only a promotional event.
But since Steiner rose to fame through the Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive, he’s become one of the most popular and recognizable characters in the paddock. We can say that his childhood dream came true, he defended the gates from the attacks of NHL stars, but, of course, of the current generation – Nick Suzuki, Kayden Goulet and Sam Montembo.
