The Melbourne race has proven to be the most productive for McLaren so far this season, but it hasn’t been all smooth sailing.
At the end of the race Lando Norris was fifth and Daniel Ricciardo sixth. Lando’s car was almost out of fuel – the engineer asked him to pull out, and Daniel, who was five seconds behind, so as not to attack his partner, so as not to force him to increase consumption. It was important to go through the control monster after the finish – and earn points with two cars.
“If Lando’s car loses power, what do you want me to do?” Riccardo asked his engineer. “Then you just drive by,” replied his engineer Tom Stallard. “Just don’t pressure him. If his car loses power, I don’t want an accident. In this case you can just drive past it. But I don’t want you to pressure him as long as it’s good.”
Both riders finished, Norris handed over a liter of fuel filled according to the regulations after the race.
