It was not a good race in Melbourne for the Haas drivers, with Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen finishing 13th and 14th. For the first time of the season, the American team scored no points and dropped from fifth to seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship, ahead of McLaren and Alfa Romeo.
Mick Schumacher (13th): “The race turned out to be event-rich. In the early laps Carlos Sainz turned for me and carried him across the track. I think we missed each other a few meters away. Then we got even closer to Yuki while on the safety car track.
We didn’t lose much in terms of pace, but it’s a shame there aren’t many opportunities to overtake on track. We can learn a lot this weekend, there were positive things to remember. I hope we do better in Imola.”
Kevin Magnussen (14th): “It was fun and the track is interesting. It’s a shame we didn’t score any points today, but we bet on hard tires because we thought the speed of the car would give us more than the starting positions, but the safety car departure ruined our strategy.
The settings were not optimal for the start, I had some problems with the tires on the new asphalt, but I managed and in the race I was much closer to my rivals, with a high pace. We were able to turn the situation in our favor and next time we will earn points.”
Gunther Steiner, team leader: “It didn’t go as planned. We made sure the safety car didn’t start at the wrong time, but seriously, sometimes you’re lucky and sometimes you don’t.
The car is fast, the drivers have done a great job. We know that if we qualify higher, we can earn points and we will keep trying.
As I always say, this season you can finish in the top ten with the car, we just had a difficult weekend. He was only in the first three stages, but now we’re going to Imola.
