Carlos Sainz: Shouldn’t have been so aggressive

Charles Leclerc won the Australian Grand Prix, but his partner was unlucky: Carlos Sainz failed to finish, flew off the track and admitted it was his fault.

Charles Leclerc (1st): “To be honest, according to our calculations, we should have been slower than Red Bull in speed on this track, but we should probably reconsider these calculations.

It turned out that we are stronger than expected, and this was a pleasant surprise. Last season was very difficult for us, but this year the team has managed to build a reliable and fast car, create a powerful engine, and my job is to give quality feedback to the engineers so that they understand what I want to achieve with F1. -75.

I am incredibly happy and proud to drive for Ferrari. Our results confirm that this is a great team, because even last year it was impossible to guarantee that we would return to this level, but we did it.

Now we have to keep attacking, because the season will be long, but we have started very well.”

Carlos Sainz (didn’t finish): “The car has the same problems as yesterday. Some switches didn’t work, we had to change the steering wheel at the last minute before the start, so the spare steering wheel was not optimally prepared for the start.

The switches were in the wrong positions, activating the system that prevented the engine from turning off. We lost some positions but the car had hard tires and I was in a hurry, trying to win back and making a mistake.

I only have myself to blame for this. Obviously we are still only looking for an approach to 18 inch tires and on this track hard rubber doesn’t work effectively in the early laps after the start. It couldn’t be attacked with such intensity as I did.

The conclusion is simple: there was no need to act so aggressively. I had to be patient. But the team didn’t work perfectly either. There were too many problems, which increased the pressure, and under these circumstances I didn’t behave the way I should.
