Fernando Alonso did a great job in Canada, finished second – and was pleased with the result…
Q: Fernando, you had some problems in the race, yet you finished just nine seconds behind Max…
Fernando Alonso: Yes, it’s cool! The race wasn’t easy from the start, I lost position at the start and thought second place was gone and I had to look after George and the Ferrari drivers. But then the car allowed me to add, I overtook Lewis and rode at a very good pace for most of the distance.
In the last 20-25 laps Lewis was going really fast and I had to attack at the limit to leave him behind. In the end I drove all 70 laps in almost qualifying rhythm, without being able to breathe, but I liked it.
Q: How come you lost the position to Lewis at the start?
Fernando Alonso: I reacted well to the starting traffic light, but in the first seconds the car was not fast enough. Maybe the grip on the other side was worse. We’ll handle that.
Q: You put Hard tires on the second stretch and Max and Lewis were on Medium. Why did you make such a decision?
Fernando Alonso: We had no new Medium kits. We handed out the kits for qualifying, but on Friday there was less time than usual, we didn’t have time to check everything. But we did everything right – our hard tires worked great.
Q: Now you are just nine points behind Sergio Perez in the championship. Do you think you can bypass it?
Fernando Alonso: Yes.
