Valtteri Bottas actually missed the second practice of the Canadian Grand Prix due to electronics problems – the Finn only drove three slow laps. His Alfa Romeo teammate Guanyu Zhou set the 16th fastest time and expects to improve in qualifying thanks to new products.
Guanyu Zhou (16th): “Not a bad Friday, but I have a feeling we’ll have a lot of fun on Saturday after we install the new stuff.
I loved the track: it is quite bumpy and this feature is noticeable on the new generation machines. Moreover, it is not easy to attack the curbs here. In some ways the track reminds me of the Melbourne track – just as hard. At the start of the first practice, the asphalt was a bit slippery, but the main task was to find the rhythm and attack the curbs without losing control of the car.
In the evening we have to work, but I have the feeling that we can already take a big step forward before the third practice. The battle is very tight, so I expect a very intense qualifying. I’m quite happy with the pace as we are closer to the opponents than usual on Friday. On Saturday it will be important to put all the components together – the car is competitive, the speed is there – you just have to show the result.”
Valtteri Bottas (without time): “Too bad to miss the second practice. I had problems with the electronics – every time I downshifted the gearbox went into neutral. During the session we couldn’t find the cause, so we had to stop working. Of course we will find a solution, but the situation is not ideal.
We have to keep the training clean and minimize the number of technical problems. I know everyone on the team is working so hard to make this possible. Hopefully Saturday will be able to win back the lost time.
When we talk about the first training session, the team mainly paid attention to working with mechanical settings. There are some old parts on the car, but on Saturday we will put new ones in so we can add more. We have a good balance, so we can rely on something.
It’s hard to talk about times on the circle because you miss the second part of free practice. Let’s see what results Saturday brings. The weather can be changeable, which makes the fight exciting and opens up new opportunities. You have to fix the car and be ready to fight in any weather.”
