Alex Albon’s daring strategy brought Williams the first point of the season. After the finish, the Thai rider admitted that the quarterback had calculated 19th place to be the highest possible result, but things turned out differently in the race…
Alex Albon: “We always knew that C2 tires would fit our car, but today I did the last 30 laps of the distance like I did in qualifying. It was unusual.
I started last. Before the start, our quarterback said that if no one retired, I would finish 19th or 20th. Even 18th place seemed out of reach. But I finished tenth!
I ran the whole distance on one set of C2 tires and didn’t ask for a pit stop because the pace stayed good. Usually getting out of the safety car is a good time for a pit stop, but I stayed on track. Then the engineer asked if I could finish on this set. I have confirmed that this is possible.
Usually the team tells you how to act at the right time. I knew how many laps I had to do – and was surprised that I wasn’t called to the pit stop. They let me on the track until the last lap.
At the pit stop there was a hitch when attaching the left front wheel, so I left next to Zhou.
Like I said, we were sure we would finish 19th and 20th and tried to calculate how much we would lose from 18th. And I finished 10th. Anything can happen in racing.”
