The forecast promised a high chance of rain on Friday, so the teams did not pit to complete the entire work program with tires on a dry track. Because of this we managed to collect a lot of information and the downpour started after the second training …
Mario Isola: “Unusually, many teams were already working in a long series of circles in the first session. There are several reasons for this. First, it was important to gather information in case the second session was ruined by rain. Second, they wanted to work on asphalt that was not yet covered with a layer of used rubber, as these are the conditions we can expect tomorrow when heavy rain washes it away.
The focus was on soft tires. Even on a slippery track on a Friday morning, they wore out quickly. Hard tires have been used much less often, perhaps because teams are saving them for the race. While the weather in Montreal is extremely unpredictable, we expect it to remain that way for the rest of the weekend.”
