For the Canadian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez and Yuki Tsunoda got behind the wheel of one of the most unusual cars in the world – Zamboni, designed to work ice between periods of a hockey game. The speed of the Zamboni is only 15 km per hour, but this machine is present at every hockey game across Canada and abroad.
A pair of Formula 1 racers battled for victory in a time trial against Canadian snowboarder and Olympic champion Sebastien Tutan – they were met on a makeshift track in the Montreal Olympic Park by Pernell-Karl (PK) Subban, a hockey player and defender of the New Jersey Devils. The track included switchbacks and long straights, repeating sections of the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit.
The race was won by Sergio Pérez, who received the ice victory cup.
Sergio Perez: “It was a surprise for me. Even in the morning I didn’t know I would be behind the wheel of Zamboni. But with Red Bull you always know it’s going to be fun – and this time too.
I saw the Zambonis clearing the ice, but didn’t know what to expect from flying. I managed to find the secret that made me fast – the bunny mode! There is a switch that allows you to go fast like a rabbit or slow like a turtle. Zamboni is actually quite fast, and if you turn with a lot of effort and a lot of throttle, you can even raise the wheels a bit.
