Recently, there were rumors in the paddock that Alpine’s reserve driver Oscar Piastri could replace Nicolas Latifi at the wheel of Williams as early as this season. At a press conference in Montreal on Saturday, Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer said the team plans to see Oscar make his Formula debut in 2023.
Safnauer did not go into details, but hinted that Alpine could transfer Piastri to another team: “We have a contract with Oscar and we have several options for him, but there is no point in rushing. We will take a break during the season of rumours, look around and make the necessary decisions.
We don’t discuss the details of our contracts with the riders, so even if I wanted to give some details I couldn’t. But I’m ready to confirm – our plan is to have him perform next year.
Oscar is a young talented driver and as we all know he recently tested last year’s car. The last time it was at Silverstone and before that he worked behind the wheel at other tracks and we are planning more tests for him. Oscar is doing a great job.”
