In 2014, Formula 1 switched from naturally aspirated V8 engines to 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines. These engines are much quieter than their predecessors, which many fans did not like.
Over time, everyone got used to the new sound, but in 2026, when the teams move to a new generation of power plants, the engine sound will become louder. That is what the head of Formula 1 Stefano Domenicali promised in an interview with the Australian radio station 3AW.
“The intention is to make the sound of the new engines louder, as sound is part of our emotions,” Domenicali said. “That’s what our fans want and we have a duty to provide it.”
When asked if Formula 1 could switch to fully electric powertrains in the future, Stefano Domenicali answered clearly: “No, absolutely not.
We must have a different sound – music to my ears. When there were twelve-cylinder engines in Formula 1, they sounded very different – very loud. Gradually we moved to ten cylinders, then to eight, now to six, but there will be no further reduction.
The situation has changed, but our plants will remain hybrid in the future.”
