Formula 1 returns to the 4.7km Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the first time since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 competitions having been canceled by COVID-19. To say the races are eagerly awaited would be an understatement, as Montreal is a place teams love to go and fans in Canada eagerly await the return of the Grand Prix.
As F1 had not played on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit for a long time and the cars and tires had changed a lot, training was essential for all teams. The first two tries were won by overall leader Max Verstappen, the third is currently underway.
The circuit is quite close to the fences, in particular the famous “Wall of Champions”, which brought together three F1 world champions (Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve), as well as many other drivers. There’s not a lot of space, so a stuck car could contribute to a safety car, or at least a virtual safety car.
In addition to the “Wall of Champions”, the circuit is also known for its hairpin turn 10 and opening turns 1-2, which are called “Senna S”. The riders will go through 14 corners, there will be three DRS zones on the track. The first DRS zone is between turns 7 and 8, the second just before turn 12 and before entering turn 13, and the last zone starts after turn 14, across the straight before and just before the turn 1.
Pirelli should introduce the softest tires they have available: hard C3 “white”, medium C4 “yellow” and soft C5 “red”. The 2019 race used a one-stop strategy, so it will be interesting to see what the teams come up with this year.
