Sebastian Vettel is back in the press, but not just because the four-time world champion is about to return to the Red Bull RB7 at the Nürburgring race show in September, and not just because of his new investment projects.
Recently, Sebastian tried himself in a completely different field and in a completely different capacity: during the day he did an internship at the municipal clinic in the city of Karlsruhe, located in Baden-Württemberg, near the border of Germany and France.
He ended up there at the invitation of Uwe Spetzger, head of the neurosurgery department, and Vettel personally attended two operations under the program, which is called “Neurosurgeon for a day”.
During one of these operations, the patient was removed from a cyst formed as a result of a brain tumor, and in the second, Sebastian saw how a fractured cervical intervertebral disc was replaced with a titanium prosthesis.
The Formula 1 veteran spoke about this experience in an interview with the Badische Neueste Nachrichten newspaper and even drew parallels between the professions of a racer and a neurosurgeon, despite all their differences.
“You have to have confidence in yourself and your skills, and the work has to bring you joy,” said Vettel. “This is the only way to achieve perfect accuracy and constantly strive for better results.
Moreover, in both professions, anything can only be achieved with the support of a great team. Unfortunately, this is often underestimated. Success in sport, as in life, always requires the commitment of many people.”
However, Vettel is not going to become a medical worker.
“This is of course a very interesting profession. But then I would have to sit on the student bench and dedicate myself too long to studying,” he added with a laugh.
