McLaren’s best result in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix was Daniel Ricciardo’s ninth place. The Australian led teammate Lando Norris for the second time this season. Lando himself did not reach the final due to problems with the power plant.
Daniel Riccardo (9th): “It’s great to make it to the final again. On the one hand, if you make it to the final but show ninth place, you think the result could be higher, but on the other hand, when the track dried up, we lost our advantage. Oddly enough, I felt more competitive on wet roads, but on a drying track I had problems with the rear tires.
In view of the above, the weekend is developing positively. It is clear that we have taken another step in the right direction. We were very fast, both on dry and wet tracks, which is a good sign.
I’m looking forward to the race and hope to earn points by finishing the weekend with a good result. Several cars are also not in their usual places, but you never know how events will develop in the race. Several potentially slow cars start at the front, with faster Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez in the back – we’re in for an interesting race.”
Lando Norris (14th): “Unfortunately my car had some technical problems at the end of the second session, which prevented me from trying to compete for the final. It’s a shame, but before the race we will solve the problem.
There will be a lot of laps in the race, you can overtake on this track, so I will do my best to regain positions and at least earn points.”
Andreas Seidli, Team Principal: “Qualifying at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was difficult due to the changeable weather. It rained at the start of the first session, but then it stopped and the track started to dry out. Unfortunately we lost Lando at the start of the second session – power plant problems prevented him from showing time. We’ll find out what’s causing it. Daniel made progress, reaching the final and starting ninth.
The team turned its attention to the race. We expect dry weather on Sunday. Taking into account the results of qualifying, an exciting race awaits us. The goal of the team is to progress with two cars and score points.”
