Pirelli acknowledges that the upcoming tender, which will determine the monopoly supplier of racing tires to Formula 1 teams for the period from 2025 to 2027, will be much more difficult than previous similar competitions held by the FIA.
A number of reputable sources, including the BBC and Auto Motor und Sport, reported that the federation had already accepted two applications for consideration – from Pirelli and from Japanese company Bridgestone, but neither the FIA nor Formula 1 have officially confirmed this. .
“We don’t know who our competitor is. Rumors are rumors and all I know is that technically we don’t know anything,” said Mario Isola, head of Pirelli’s racing division. – I can say that the tender conditions are much more complicated than in the past. This document has many parts and many additional elements have been added compared to the terms of the previous tender.
There is a large part related to the environmental theme, a large part is devoted to our ability to provide products with certain characteristics and service for certain parameters, with the right number of our engineers. We will have to put in a lot of effort to prepare all the necessary documents.”
The FIA will analyze the requests from Pirelli and apparently still from Bridgestone, after which commercial talks with both tire manufacturers will begin in the next phase of the competitive procedure, which could take several months.
In any case, Isola is confident that Pirelli is in a strong position, as the Italian company also has a unique experience of working with Formula 1 teams over the past 13 years, in addition to being an official partner of Formula 1 and the main sponsor of the Grand Prix.
“We are very actively involved in advertising and marketing programs, we support all promoter and FIA initiatives,” added Isola. – I believe we are more of a partner than a sponsor. And we would like to keep it that way.
We want to be part of this sport, not because we want to dictate anything, but because we work successfully with our shareholders, and also have constant contact with the riders and with the teams. We have built a very efficient system to give them the information they need.
I compared our paperwork we prepared in 2011 with the application we filed now, and the difference is just unbelievable. You will laugh, but in 2011 it was one page, and now we are preparing a whole book!….”
