In Canada, Carlos Sainz was ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc in qualifying for the first time in a season, but the Monegask was penalized by starting from the last row and practically did not take part in the fight.
Carlos Sainz (3rd): “The car was fast, we qualified well in difficult conditions. In the latter sector, it was necessary to take risks to achieve more – and I exaggerated a bit. Unfortunately it cost me the chance to start from the front row, but I am not too disappointed as I fought until the last minute and third place is a good starting position on this track.
We have a good pace all weekend, tomorrow I will do my best. There’s an interesting race ahead, I’m looking forward to it.”
Charles Leclerc (16th): “Given the penalty, there was no point in struggling further in qualifying. I was ahead of Yuki Tsunoda, who decided the outcome of the battle for 19th place, and it was impossible to achieve more. It seems that one position is a small thing, but on such a weekend it can also help.
Tomorrow I will do everything I can to limit the losses.”
