Pirelli waiting for one pit stop

If, as the forecast promises, Sunday’s race will be on a dry track, then the strategy of one pit stop will allow you to cover the distance as quickly as possible.

Pirelli believes it is best to start on Medium and then move on to Hard. Soft and Medium degradation is similar, but using Medium tires allows for more pit timing and a more flexible strategy. A Soft-Hard strategy is also possible, but drivers will have to pit earlier than if they start on Medium.

The two-stop strategy is much slower, but can work under certain circumstances. Partly because you lose less pit time in Montreal than any other circuit on the calendar, but also because drivers effectively shorten the first and last corners by pitting this section.

Starters in the back can use hard tires during the first stint so they can stay on the track as long as possible in the hope of a safety car, and get a set of fast, softer tires during the last stint. You can overtake in Montreal, so track position is not as important as in other Grands Prix.

Mario IsolaPirelli: “During qualifying, track conditions allowed the transition to intermediate tires at the end of the first session, although the transition point between wet and intermediate tires turned out to be a little different than we thought.

The asphalt dried up quite quickly, but some areas were still very wet, while others were almost completely dry. As a result we saw a fantastic qualifying where the riders could show all their skills.

Since only one version of the all-year rain and intermediate tires is homologated, they should be suitable for a very wide range of conditions, including those we’ve seen in Canada. Rain and intermediate tires worked properly, only one rider in the qualifying final went on slicks but track conditions did not allow this at the time.

Tomorrow the conditions will be very different, the teams will be able to make the most of the information gathered on Friday.”
