Alonso’s best qualifying result in ten years

Fernando Alonso qualified second in Canada and will start from the front row for the first time since the 2012 German Grand Prix. His teammate Esteban Ocon qualified seventh. In the race, Alpine drivers will try to compete for the first podium of the season.

Fernando Alonso (2nd): “Great result – I’m very happy with the second place at the start! In such weather conditions it was impossible to predict the grip level in each new lap, further complicating the qualifying battle. I think the front row was a bit unexpected but it will be great to take your place at the start of the race.

Let’s see if I can compete with Max Verstappen in the first corner. Still, our main goal is to earn a lot of points. The team deserves congratulations for working hard on the car upgrades that made this result possible.

It will be a long race in completely different weather conditions, but I am confident in our capabilities. Let’s see what result we can achieve.”

Esteban Ocon (7th): “First of all I’m happy for the team and Fernando. He has a very strong weekend and deserves a front row start. I’m a bit disappointed because under such circumstances I could have done better. I couldn’t squeeze the most out of the car – I didn’t have enough speed all weekend.

As usual I will continue to work with the engineers to find a way to add a little more. In any case, both our cars take high places at the start – we will try to earn a lot of points for the team. It’s the most important.”

Otmar Safnauer, Team Principal: “We are very happy with the results on Saturday – both riders have a good chance of earning points in the race. Congratulations to Fernando on his second place in qualifying. He drove great all weekend and now he is fully focused on how to earn a lot of points for the team.

When it rains in Formula 1, there is a chance for drama and big opportunities. The team and both drivers worked brilliantly according to plan in all three qualifying sessions, choosing the right tires and the right times to get out on track, allowing them to compete for high positions.

Now it is important to focus on the race, develop a flexible strategy and score a lot of points with the two cars.”
