Sebastian Vettel: The car kept skidding

In Canada, both Aston Martin drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll failed to qualify for the second part of qualifying, finishing 17th and 18th, although Vettel finished third in the third wet session. Immediately after the session, the team had no explanation for the loss of speed.

Sebastian Vettel (17th): “I don’t know where the pace has gone. The team made virtually no changes to the car between practice three and qualifying. We were too slow and don’t understand why. That’s a shame, because in such circumstances we could perform well.

Given that the car was very difficult to drive, such a lap time comes as no surprise. The car was constantly sliding – the rear wheels had no grip on the track. It is necessary to analyze the telemetry as it is quite clear that something was not working.

However, I am optimistic about the race. After qualifying we were in a catching up role but we had a good pace in practice on Friday so we can bounce back.

Lance Walk (18th): “We were quite competitive in practice three, so it’s a shame we couldn’t show speed in qualifying. In the first session, the car simply had no clutch, so we were at the very back of the pack.

Yellow flags at the end of the session prevented lap times from improving – this happened just as the track dried up and got a second faster.

It will be difficult to start from the last positions, but in practice the car had a good pace, so we will do our best to earn points.”

Mike Krak, team leader: “After the high speed shown in the third practice, we are disappointed with the results of the qualifying. It is necessary to find out why the pace has changed so much between sessions.

In the first part of qualifying Lance and Sebastian had no grip. Even switching to a new set of tires didn’t improve the situation, although the track did get faster towards the end of the session. We haven’t worked well enough, but we know you can overtake in Canada, our drivers are extremely motivated and the car is fast on dry surfaces.”
