In Montreal, Fernando Alonso showed the best time in the third practice and today he shares the front row with Max Verstappen. The Spaniard is pleased with Saturday’s results, but thinks a top five finish would be a real success…
Fernando Alonso: “On Saturday morning in the rain I showed the best time and it became clear that we are competitive in wet conditions. But from the second part of qualifying the asphalt was almost dry – I even started dreaming of rain.
Fortunately the rain was not necessary, the car was fast and in varying conditions. We showed good pace on a dry track on Friday, were quick in the rain on Saturday morning, in qualifying I showed the second time – so far the weekend is going very well.
In qualifying I lost half a second to Max – that’s a lot. He’s in a different league, we couldn’t even dream of pole position. But the front row is beyond our expectations. The car still lacks downforce and grip. We’ve worked hard to reduce tire wear, fine-tuned the settings. I think we are better prepared to fight this time than in any other race this season.
I would like to take the lead on the first lap. I will attack. Leadership is so much fun! Then they can fight us. Our real goal is to finish in the top five. For us, fifth place is comparable to victory.”
