Russell: We are moving forward, but Red Bull is still ahead

George Russell retired from the Canadian Grand Prix because after the first ten laps, while running in 4th place, he went too far and the car crashed. Although he was able to get to the Mercedes pits and even return to the track, it turned out that the equipment was too badly damaged.

However, the British driver also sees positive aspects and these mainly have to do with the fact that his team has really managed to improve the car.

George Russell: “The pace our car was capable of in Canada was a pleasant surprise. If the track in Barcelona was a perfect match for the W14, then the Canadian one is completely different in terms of characteristics, and yet we showed good pace there and were able to compete with Aston Martin.

The work on the modernization of the car is therefore moving in the right direction and in Austria we are waiting for another interesting weekend, of which the Saturday sprint is on the program. This race is never an easy scenario, but if we talk about the team, we have definitely made good progress.

I think the characteristics of the Red Bull Ring suit us better in theory than the Montreal circuit, and at Silverstone we hope to take another step forward, because the British circuit is closer to Barcelona in terms of characteristics. In general, everyone on the team is doing everything they can to close the gap with the leaders.

But Red Bull Racing is still far ahead. Even though their advance slowed somewhat, they averaged three paces ahead of the rest of the platoon. We’ve taken a step forward, which means they’re still a few steps ahead of us. This team is still doing very well, but I hope the day is not far away when we manage to turn the tide.

The peculiarity of the Austrian track is the combination of turns, and on the part of the track that is on top of the hill, the cars are strongly affected by gusts of wind, and this may surprise you. But here everyone is equal, especially since we only have one training session this weekend, moreover, the influence of the weather factor cannot be ruled out. But the more interesting it gets! ..”
