Lance Stroll is 80 points behind Fernando Alonso in the individual standings. At Spielberg on Thursday, the Canadian Aston Martin driver admitted he had to step down to match his team-mate’s level.
Lance Stroll: “I don’t think I maxed out most weekends, so I don’t think individual results are significant. I certainly have something to add. Fernando is performing at a very high level and I have to keep working to get better.
All things considered, I started the season pretty strong. I did well in Bahrain, Jeddah and Melbourne, but I didn’t do well in Baku either, but I know why.
In Miami it turned out to be difficult because I couldn’t use the second set of tires in the first part of qualifying. In Monaco, in the second part of qualifying, the car suffered damage, in Barcelona we were competitive and in Canada there were problems again in the second part.
Each time there were reasons why the results weren’t very good, but in terms of pure pace Fernando was faster than me and he was riding well.
