FIA clarifies qualifying rules

Before the start of the Austrian weekend, the FIA temporarily changed the rules for Saturday qualifying for the sprint to avoid a repeat of the controversial situation that arose in Baku.

Previously, the regulations required drivers to use only new sets of tyres: hard in the first part of qualifying, medium in the second and soft in the third. In Baku it turned out that McLaren driver Lando Norris simply did not have a new set of Soft tires – and was unable to participate in the final session.

Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, FIA Race Director Niels Wittich clarified the rules, allowing drivers to use both new and already rolled-in soft tires in the qualifying final.

At the same time, only one set of tires can be used in each session, meaning riders cannot put on a rolled set of Soft on the first try and put on a new one on the second run.

The rule change has been approved by the FIA, Formula 1 and nine of the ten teams. The votes of eight teams are enough to pass the amendments.
