Alonso: I wouldn’t say we’re overtaking Red Bull

Fernando Alonso opted to forego predictions for the coming weekend, noting only that he hopes to perform more like Canada than Barcelona.

Fernando Alonso: “I don’t know what to expect from this weekend, first we have to see how tomorrow’s practice goes, to understand how the car behaves and how competitive we will be on this track.

Of course, because our results in Barcelona and Canada were so different, I hope we get closer to the level we were in Montreal. At the same time, we will try to use technical innovations even more effectively, because the weekend in Canada turned out to be very short, as the first training session had to be cancelled.

This weekend again we have little time to prepare, just one Friday practice, but I hope we have time to check the car and do some tests.

I wouldn’t argue that we are starting to catch up with Red Bull Racing – I think we have to wait some more time and work on different circuits that differ in configuration and characteristics. In Barcelona, only a few weeks before Canada, we lost almost a minute on the leaders, and there it was most likely due to the characteristics of the track.

But the weekend in Montreal was very successful for us, so I hope we can close the gap now. However, it is clear that we are much more interested in how we will look compared to Ferrari and Mercedes, because Red Bull is in its own class this year.

Our main aim is to have both Aston Martins finish in the top 10 every weekend and try to keep up with the competition with Mercedes and Ferrari. We still find it hard to believe that we are fighting them on an equal footing, because at the start of the season in Bahrain we certainly did not expect to be able to reach such high positions.

So now we have fun every weekend – it’s great that Aston Martin is involved in this fight.
