Verstappen: I didn’t even think about slicks in qualifying

Max Verstappen dominates the weekend in Montreal. On Saturday he confidently won qualifying but admitted he struggled in mixed conditions.

Max Verstappen: “Honestly, qualifying was very difficult. Especially the first part, when visibility was close to zero, and the riders slowed down to get some free space up front. The tires were cold, the clutch was not enough. For me it was the first session that proved to be the hardest, then the track started to dry out and it got much easier. Well, in the final the track condition improved every minute, it was necessary to start a fast lap in time.

I never thought about switching to slicks. In some places – in the first and second turns, as well as from four to six, there was too much water, although the rest of the track seemed almost dry. But even on intermediate tires it wasn’t easy to get a clean lap.

For Sunday, the weather forecast promises dry weather. On Friday we were close to Ferrari in a long series of laps. I’m sure we have an interesting race ahead of us. I’m glad Fernando starts next to me from the front row. As a child I followed Formula 1, watching him win races and titles. He’s gotten a bit older now, but still very fast. I know he has a good start, so I have to be on my guard.”
