The weekend in Spielberg takes place in the sprint format on Saturday, when the teams have just one hour of practice during which they must test new products, strategize and evaluate tire life. Luckily we were lucky with the weather – the rains start in the late afternoon.
Six teams brought innovations to Austria at the same time, hoping to collect information about their work here to take full advantage of them next week at Silverstone. With each stage, other teams’ cars are becoming more and more similar to the Red Bull RB19.
Williams lost the first 15 minutes, but the team representative said everything went according to plan.
After riding on Hard and Medium for most of the session, the riders only switched to Soft, if not all, in the final minutes to prepare for today’s qualifying.
Not without minor mistakes – Bottas and Alonso went off track in the first corner, Tsunoda in third, Hamilton in sixth, Leclerc and Ocon in the last – with no consequences for the cars.
Max Verstappen led the protocol with a lap time of 1:05.742 on the Medium.
