McLaren asks for Norris fine in Canada to be reviewed

McLaren has submitted a request to the FIA to review the Canadian Grand Prix stewards’ decision on a five-second penalty for Lando Norris for “unsportsmanlike conduct” on track in the safety car.

In this case, the team refers to Article 14.1.1 of the International Sports Code, which refers to the right of competitors to challenge the referee’s decision if new material evidence appears that was not available at the time of the decision.

As highlighted in a McLaren press release, the team respects and trusts the FIA and the stewards, especially as they have to perform difficult tasks:

“Stewards have to make decisions quickly, analyze complex circumstances and often have to deal with incomplete information.

In Canada we were surprised by this fine and the arguments on which the decision was made were not convincing. Immediately after the race, we turned to the stewards and tried to understand the reasons for the penalty.

The FIA regulations provide ways and processes to understand the complexities of Formula 1, especially when decisions are made in the course of the race. One such process that demonstrates the strength of the organization is the “right to judgement” when it is in the interest of the sport, which McLaren fully supports.”

Furthermore, the team emphasizes that after the race they analyzed in detail all the circumstances of what happened in Canada in a calm atmosphere and also studied previous similar precedents. According to McLaren, this analysis showed that there is enough evidence to request that the FIA review the Canadian Grand Prix stewards’ decision, which it has done.

“We will continue to work closely and constructively with the FiA, as we usually do, and we will agree with the federation’s decision,” McLaren said in a statement.
