At Spielberg, Lance Stroll qualified over Fernando Alonso for the second time this season and secured sixth place going into Sunday’s race. His teammate Aston Martin was seventh fastest. Both riders are optimistic about the remaining days of the Austrian weekend.
Lance walk (6th): “I’m happy with my last lap and how the AMR23 rode today. I think we made the most of qualifying. Compliance with the boundaries of the track was very clearly monitored – several of my laps were canceled but I tried to drive through these fast corners as quickly as possible. In any case, everyone is on an equal footing and we have to get used to such restrictions on the Austrian circuit.
It looks like we will have rainy weather on Saturday during the sprint qualifying and the sprint itself. It’s good that I already have a good starting position for Sunday’s race.”
Fernando Alonso (7th): “I’m in a good mood after qualifying. The battle on this track is always tight – if you look at the times, the gaps are no more than two or three tenths.
In the second part I had a canceled lap which meant I had to use an extra set of tires to make it to the final. As a result, I only had one set at my disposal in the final, which is not ideal. Nevertheless, sixth and seventh place are good positions for us.
Saturday will be interesting as rain is possible, while the forecast for Sunday promises dry weather. The car is fast and I look forward to the rest of the weekend with optimism.”
