Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth at Spielberg and is pleased with the result, while his Mercedes teammate George Russell failed to qualify for the final session…
Lewis Hamilton (5th): “Fifth place is not pole at all, but I accept this result and will try to do better in the race.
Today our car was about third in speed. Red Bull and Ferrari are clearly faster here and maybe Aston Martin is ahead of us and we’ll be fourth.
On the track, however, I didn’t think about it – I just tried to ride as best as I could. This is not the easiest circuit, which historically is not very suitable for our car, that was confirmed once again today. Qualifying proved difficult, but let’s see if we can achieve more in qualifying on Saturday before the sprint – a lot depends on the weather.
Fifth place in Sunday’s race is a good starting position, last year I started further and the race turned out to be difficult. I hope things go better this time on Sunday.”
George Russell (11th): “I just wasn’t fast enough today. From the first lap in practice it was not possible to feel the car. During the sprint weekend you have little time to change anything. Let’s see what we can do tonight and tomorrow.
An eleventh place is not the best starting position, but this year we have had good results from lower places, so all is not lost.
In practice the tires wore out quickly, so on Sunday we will probably have a two-stop strategy.”
