Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso scored points in the sprint at Spielberg on Saturday and finished fourth and fifth. Aston Martin drivers are pleased with the result and expect to build on the success in Sunday’s race.
Lance walk (4e): “There is no point in talking about the sprint. The big news today is the death of Dilano van’t Hoff in Spa. My thoughts are with him and his family.
This turn of events must change, it has claimed the lives of two young talented riders over the past five years, and we cannot remain silent.
As for the sprint, we had a great race pace and I’m happy with my first lap. Over the course of the distance, it was important to monitor the condition of the tires on the drying track. The team developed the right strategy and we executed it perfectly. Fourth and fifth position are a good result and tomorrow we will attack with all our might.”
Fernando Alonso (5th): “I’m happy that our team earned so many points today – three more than Ferrari and eight more than Mercedes. Good Saturday to the team. I had a nice and fair fight with Lance – only on the last lap did we approach him dangerously in turn eight.
We thought about switching to slicks, but there were seven laps to go and we felt we were ahead of the slick pursuers enough to hold our positions. The fact that Nico Hulkenberg pitted and finished just a second behind me obviously says a lot, but we still made the right decision.
I hope we get more points tomorrow. The weather should be better, but I’m starting seventh – let’s see what we can do. I set myself the task of finishing in the top five.
Sad news came from Spa. My thoughts are with those close to Dilano. On some fast circuits visibility is very low in the rain and we can’t let a tragedy like this happen again.”
