Aston Martin climbed to eighth in the Constructors’ Championship ahead of Haas thanks to Lance Stroll’s tenth place. His teammate Sebastian Vettel finished twelfth and scored no points for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix.
Lance Walk (10th): “We had a great strategy for the race and I’m very happy to get one point. The team made the right decision to drive a very long first stint – the one-stop strategy worked and I was able to keep a string of cars behind me. Overtaking Daniel Ricciardo was a nice bonus – I was on fresher tires so the maneuver turned out to be quite easy.
This year is much harder for us, but I’m glad we had a successful race. I want to say a huge thank you to all the fans who supported us this weekend – it’s incredible to be able to race at home after such a long break.”
Sebastian Vettel (12th): “Not my day. I stopped in the pits early enough to return to an empty track, but the safety car mode turned on at the wrong time and ruined my race.
Closer to the finish my tires were very worn – I tried to hold back my rivals but I couldn’t. Lance had a more recent kit, so the team asked me to skip it so Lance would try to attack Daniel – and I gladly skipped it.
The result is disappointing as we showed good pace all weekend and could have done more, but sometimes it doesn’t work out in your favour. Sunday was such a day. The team did a great job, earning Lance one point.
Mike Krak, Team Principal: “In theory Lance’s 10th place is not enough reward for the hard work over the weekend and a race that had to be fought from start to finish. The deserved point doesn’t tell the whole story, though – Lance showed patience, driving an extremely long first stint on hard tires and chasing a line of cars behind him. Closer to the finish, he was able to attack and score a point – thanks in part to Sebastian, who kindly let Lance pass so he could attack Daniel.
Sebastian also drove well and had a measured race. Starting from last position always plays against you, and Sebastian’s strategy unfortunately didn’t work due to the virtual safety cars.
However, I think we worked well as a team today. We made the most of a complex series of strategic choices, made pit stops with confidence and returned home energized by the increasing pace of our car.”
