Lewis Hamilton: I remain optimistic

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in Melbourne behind teammate George Russell. Despite this result, the seven-time world champion is pleased with the results of the third race of the season, as Mercedes pulled out all the stops, given the speed of the car.

“I couldn’t fight George for position because my car was overheating, so I had to pull out,” Lewis said after the Australian Grand Prix. “Nevertheless, the team delivered an excellent result. On Friday we were 1.2 seconds behind the leaders – at that point our outlook didn’t look very impressive. But we all did great, qualified on the third row and started well – I even moved up to third.

It was great to fight, or at least think we’re fighting for the podium. However, the car still lacked the speed to stop Red Bull. And while we haven’t improved the car in the last three races, I think we earned the maximum possible points. I let the team down in Jeddah and only got one point, but in Melbourne we got a great result.

I remain optimistic. There are still 20 races to go and if we are realistic about the future we all know that the top teams are upgrading cars at about the same rate. I hope we can fight, but it won’t be easy.”
