Wolff: In Canada we were able to set a good pace

Team Mercedes performed well in Canada with Lewis Hamilton on the podium and George Russell in 4th place. Toto Wolff noted that at certain stages of the race it seemed as if Mercedes had already returned to their previous level.

Lewis Hamilton (3rd): “First of all I would like to thank everyone who works from the team, everyone is trying really hard, because it’s so hard to work, work, but not see much progress.

This is a very difficult year for me personally, but finally something is starting to work. I was very happy with qualifying and everyone in the garage was just happy. And now we’ve run the race with confidence, and this inspires great hope and confidence for the future – it means we’re making progress.

The car has potential, but the range of settings in which it works effectively is very narrow, and if you can’t do everything perfectly the W13 will be very bad at holding the track. It is extremely difficult to overcome this, but this weekend the team did an excellent job. I know we can do more, we just have to keep working.”

George Russell (4th): “I was confident that I could go faster than the Haas and Alpine cars during the race. Of course we understood that Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez would be able to continue, and to contain them we needed luck.

But we were already closer to Ferrari and Red Bull in terms of pace than in previous phases of the season, although our car is still not quite efficient.

Speaking of tactics, now after the finish I think it was probably worth the pit stop when the virtual safety car was first introduced, but in the end it would have barely changed the position I finished in.

The pace in the first two sections of the race was pretty good, but I can’t say the same about the last section – for some reason I couldn’t get the tires to warm up properly. It’s a shame I lost a bit of pace and couldn’t fight for higher positions, but 4th place is a good result. It’s great that my team-mate came on the podium and the team got a lot of points.”

Toto Wolff, Team Principal: “Lewis has always been lucky in Montreal and it turned out really well today. Both drivers performed well, although their cars were set up differently and the rear fender adjustments were also different. But today we were able to show a good pace.

Before the safety car arrived, we were driving even faster than Carlos Sainz. If we analyze individual circles, we can say that we have already returned to the previous level, but I don’t think this is the case. That’s why we have to keep working.

George took a risk in yesterday’s qualifying but it didn’t pay off so he didn’t start the race from the best position but at the start he acted smart and got ahead of several rivals before showing a fast pace and behind Lewis.

The past two weekends have confirmed that the morale of the team is still high, we have earned a lot of points even though we don’t have enough pace to fight the teams ahead.
