The FIA’s actions turned Sunday’s race into a farce as rider reshuffling in protocol continued four hours after the finish.
Over 1,200 track boundary violations were recorded during the race – an average of 17 per lap, so this isn’t a question of rules to be followed, but an individual approach to a given track, as was the case with whiting.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff sees two solutions to this problem…
Toto Wolff: “The situation turned out to be surprisingly unpleasant due to the nature of the track, the rules and the FIA’s desire to enforce them.
After the race, they analyzed every exit outside the track through sensors and cameras for a long time. We did the same at the base, watching the onboard cameras to make sure we didn’t get any extra fines.
It is very frustrating for fans, teams and drivers that these penalties continue and I only see two solutions. You have to go back to the high curbs that can damage the cars, or just lift the general restrictions and let the drivers run around the fast track.
We need to find a solution in the interests of the circuit and all parties involved, so that the races remain spectacular and the results are determined by competition, not by penalties.”
