Max Verstappen’s win in the Canadian Grand Prix allowed him to widen the gap to 46 points from the closest chaser in the championship, Sergio Perez. Sergio himself did not finish for the second time this season due to a technical malfunction.
Max Verstappen (1st): “The race turned out to be quite tough for us. I was hoping we would have a faster pace, but in reality the Ferrari car turned out to be very fast over the race distance. I can only compare with Carlos Sainz – it was difficult for me to show the same lap times as him.
After the last pit stop I had to overtake him, but I wasn’t sure if I had enough speed to overtake him and overtake closer to the finish. I attacked for a few laps and then the safety car came out, which also worked against us as Carlos was able to go into the pits with fresh tires and chase me! I didn’t like this scenario, but there was no choice.
The last 15 laps I attacked with all my strength, but I couldn’t afford to make a mistake because Carlos was very close behind me. I agree with Carlos that his car had a faster pace in the race, so we have to draw conclusions and understand the reasons.
We were again in a situation where in one race we have an advantage, and in the next – in Ferrari. There is a very close battle between us. It is important to keep earning points, but remember that the situation can change very quickly. Sergio again had technical problems – this is not good enough. There are things we can do better.”
Sergio Perez (descent): “I had technical problems with the car again – the gear was stuck and the car stopped accelerating. I don’t know what exactly happened, but disappointed with the weekend’s results. I lost points in a situation where I could count on a high result.
There were no signs of bad luck beforehand – the car just stopped accelerating when exiting the seventh corner. For us, such technical failures are very painful.”
