Mario Isola: New tires will debut at Silverstone

At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli tire manufacturers will bring a “tough” trio of compounds – C1, C2 and C3. Silverstone will introduce a new tire design that the teams tested during Friday practice in Barcelona. With the exception of some new materials which have already been homologated following an extensive testing programme, the new formulation specification is identical to the previous one.

Pirelli initially planned to use these tires from 2024, but changed the decision to increase the stability of the tire structure, as the loads generated by the current machines have already reached levels not expected until the end of the season. The new design does not affect the technical parameters or characteristics of the tyres.

Mario IsolHead of Pirelli Racing: “A new slick design will debut at the British Grand Prix using materials originally planned to be introduced next year.

Changes were necessary due to the increase in the efficiency of cars – both in terms of speed and tire load. The workload has increased due to the pre-season simulations the teams provided to Pirelli last winter, and the trend has increased as the season progresses.

In recent years, we have worked hard not only to create products that meet the expected performance parameters, but also to anticipate potential problems and respond quickly to them.

Tires with the new specification can withstand higher loads, but their technical parameters or behavior on the track do not change. All teams were able to test the new design at the Spanish Grand Prix when we gave each rider two sets during free practice sessions. Their comments were in line with our expectations, especially when it came to efficiency. In addition, the new specification allows virtually no change in front and rear tire pressures, despite the increased average load.

The debut will take place on the track, which is traditionally one of the heaviest loads on tires. In our internal documents, Silverstone is at the top of the list of tracks with the most side loads. The left front tire in particular is hard. Racers also have a hard time on the track – in fast corners overloads reach 5 g.

Contrary to design, the tire compounds we put in have not changed and are, at least name-wise, identical to last year’s C1, C2 and C3. However, the current C1 is a new composition and is in between C2 and C0. C0 tires are the new name for the strongest compound in the 2022 range.”
