Fernando Alonso I was prevented by battery problems

In Canada, Alpine achieved its best result of the season thanks to sixth place Esteban Ocon and seventh Fernando Alonso. The team narrowed the gap with McLaren to four points in the battle for fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Esteban Ocon (6th): “In the race we made a step forward compared to qualifying. I don’t think it was possible to achieve more today – we did everything we could and earned points with two cars. I think we can be called “the best of the rest”. Our car is fourth in terms of speed and the positions at the finish match this.

Closer to the finish, we applied a team strategy so as not to miss Valtteri Bottas. We succeeded and the team can be proud of the result.

I am very happy that I had the speed to stop Charles Leclerc. Unfortunately, when we had the same tyres, I couldn’t stay ahead of the finish closer to the finish. We still have a lot of work to do, but the team is progressing – we are fighting and moving in the right direction.”

Fernando Alonso (7th): “I was unlucky with the safety car – I was only ten seconds short of getting into the pitlane. Those behind me were lucky again – they turned into the pits as soon as a message appeared that the safety car was leaving the track. Because of this, they managed to stay ahead of me.

However, the biggest problem arose around the twentieth circle, when problems started with the power plant’s battery – in the middle of the straight line, the charging mode was turned on, causing a loss of power. Because of this I lost eight tenths a round. In corners I had to squeeze everything out of the car to stay in the DRS zone. A very difficult race – I am disappointed with the results due to power plant problems.

The positive results of the weekend include the fact that the car is very fast. Without the engine problems I would have finished third ahead of Lewis – I was ahead of him and kept a sufficient lead, trying to keep up with Carlos Sainz. As I said, if it hadn’t been for the engine problems, third or fourth place would have been possible despite the safety car.”
