Max Verstappen won the Canadian Grand Prix for his sixth win of the season. In particular, the RB18’s excellent speed on the straights helped it hold off Carlos Sainz’s attack in the closing stages of the race.
Max Verstappen: “The safety car made my task a bit more difficult, because during the race the Ferraris were very fast, but at the end there was a very interesting battle between us. I gave everything, but of course Carlos did the same.
It is not easy to follow the opponent on this track and I have seen him attack, recharge the battery and then attack again. Sure it’s easier to recharge the battery when you’re riding within DRS range, but the last few laps were a lot of fun!
Fortunately our car this year is able to achieve excellent speeds on the straights and that helps us a lot. Although Ferrari is very fast in general, and if I had to overtake Carlos it wouldn’t be easy to do that. But when the safety car came out and he got new tires I thought I would still rather attack than defend. Fortunately, we succeeded.”
