FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem openly supported Andretti Cadillac Racing’s bid and called for common sense to guide the decision.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem: “The selection process is very reliable, we cannot refuse any team if it fully meets the entry criteria.
The rules state that a maximum of 12 teams can participate. We have not allowed anyone, but how can we refuse GM (General Motors – the largest American automobile concern)? Common sense should be followed. GM is a real heavyweight and if they come up with Andretti, it’s good for us.
When Andretti announced their intentions, we said we needed a team with the support of the car manufacturer, and they got it. And I appreciate their perseverance.
I’m not blaming individual teams for not wanting to see a new opponent. Many want to live in their own world, where everything is familiar, where no one from the outside can come to challenge. But we believe that now the conditions for the entry of new Formula 1 participants are the most favorable.
