Carlos Sainz was one of those fined after finishing the Austrian Grand Prix. At Silverstone, the Ferrari driver commented on the stewards’ decision and assessed the team’s chances this weekend.
Carlos Sainz: “The fine in Austria was unpleasant – I already knew that I had lost positions when I got on board. I think this will not reflect well on Formula 1 and on everyone involved in our sport and putting in a lot of effort, and then we will be in this situation. A solution must be found so that the situation that occurred in Austria does not recur.
In my case, the same story repeats throughout the season. I drive well, understand the characteristics of the car, attack in races, check tire wear, defend and overtake almost every weekend, but the end result is always not what I and the team want.
After the race in Austria we made an analysis and came to interesting conclusions. I cannot give details, but I can assure you that the team always acts in my best interest and that of everyone else. I’m sure we’ll add.
This weekend we will certainly be closer to the leaders than we were three or four stages ago, but still we are well behind Red Bull. We had a really good pace in Austria, but Max Verstappen was in his own class and Sergio Perez broke through the pack. Obviously their car is faster than ours, but we are progressing and now we can compete with Aston Martin and Mercedes.
Just a few races ago they were clearly faster than us in the long run, but I hope we keep improving, have a strong weekend and fight for the podium.”
