Lewis Hamilton loves the British Grand Prix and recalled his first taste of the circuit at the FIA press conference at Silverstone, but also assured that his relationship with Mercedes will continue next year.
Lewis Hamilton «I’m happy to be back at Silverstone, here’s the best race of the season. I remember when I first came here it was many years ago when I was still karting but that race was not the best for me, I had an accident.
Then I raced here in Formula Renault, and when I was 13-14 years old I visited the British Grand Prix for the first time, but then I was already working with McLaren, just spent the weekend in the team’s pits and dreamed that one day I would also sit down in front of the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
I remember very well the reaction of the crowd in the stands at Silverstone in 2007 during my debut season with McLaren. This was probably the only time I heard the roar of the crowd as it covered the roar of race engines!
I hope the enthusiastic support from the fans this weekend will help us improve, although it’s hard to say how much, but it certainly boosts the morale of the team.
Speaking of coming weekend, our car is getting a new front wing and I hope this will help us take another step in the right direction. It cannot be said that this is a very important series of new products, but we prefer to move forward gradually, step by step, and hope that we can partially regain the gap with the leaders.
The weekend in Austria cannot be called successful, but it is this experience that allows the team to learn a lot, so we will try to apply these lessons to show better results at Silverstone.”
The seven-time world champion also spoke a few words about his negotiations with Mercedes: “The contract will be signed before the end of the season, I still have 100% confidence in this team, although our return to the level we want to be at took some time longer.
Of course it’s not easy to be in a position to catch up, but I believe eventually we’ll get back to the leaders, so we just have to keep working hard, and that’s what we’re doing. At this stage, a new front wing will appear on our car, new items are being prepared for the upcoming races. This week I had serious meetings with the heads of the aerodynamics and chassis modernization departments, and we also discussed next year’s car.
