Steiner: I hope Kevin will be on Niko’s level tomorrow

After the results of Friday’s training at Silverstone, Nico Hulkenberg showed the 7th result, and his Danish teammate – 17th, but Kevin Magnussen, although he admitted that he looked weak, explained this in part by the fact that he was mainly long-distance worked on the pace series of circles.

Kevin Magnussen (17th): “On Fridays it is customary to concentrate on working with settings and tyres. I think we looked quite weak today, but Niko managed to show a really good time. I hope that the information gathered today will allow us to draw certain conclusions.

We know that you can normally do one fast lap with our car, but then we run into problems on the race distance. So at the end of the day I was mostly focusing on pacing on long sets of circles and trying to achieve effective tire work.

Nico Hulkenberg (7th): “The track is very fast, the speeds are very high, plus the wind direction was good when we conquered all these nice high-speed combinations. When the direction of motion changes very quickly, we experience impressive g-forces.

The day went well, the pace during the long laps was not bad, but I was alone on the track most of the time, so today’s results are not entirely representative when we talk about Sunday’s race.

We’ll try to increase our pace on long sets of circles, learn to work better with rubber, and then we’ll see what we can do. We have good pace in one fast lap, but the focus should be on race preparation to see where we can improve to unlock the full potential of the car.”

Gunter Steinerteam boss: “The first practice was not easy, we faced several problems and I think we succeeded, so in the second session we looked better.

Niko showed good speed and the pace was normal on long series of laps. This series consisted of 15 laps, but more will follow on such tires in the race. But I think we’re moving in the right direction.

Kevin had some difficulties, but we’re going to set up his car the way Niko’s car was set up – that was his wish. I hope he will be at Niko’s level during the 3rd practice and then in qualifying.”
