On Friday, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff and Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur spoke about the possible appearance of an 11th team in the championship …
Toto Wolff: “We have no information on who has submitted the applications and what the proposals are, but I am sure that all interested parties, mainly the FIA and FOM, will assess them on their merits and make a decision.
Our position on this is very clear. If someone wants to come to Formula 1, they have to buy an existing team. During qualifying we already trip over each other on some circuits. There are problems with security, with logistics, we simply cannot place the eleventh team anywhere. Here at Silverstone there were boxes for a Hollywood film crew, but on some tracks that’s not possible.
Frederick Vasseur: “I agree with Toto. Think back to what happened last week. In Spielberg there was already confusion on the track, including about the boundary of the track. Imagine if there were 10% more violations.
Seriously, our position hasn’t changed. I think the appearance of the 11th team only makes sense for Formula 1 if it allows for serious progress in all directions.
Very often we talk about the nationality of the teams, but for me this is absolutely not an argument. Formula 1 is not the British Championship because 70% is based here.
The attractiveness of Formula 1 depends much more on the nationality of the drivers, which has nothing to do with the nationality of the team.
A few years ago the teams had to make great efforts to survive, and now there is a real boom around Formula 1. And if a new one comes, it should benefit everyone. But now I don’t see such proposals.”
