De Vries: I prefer it to rain

None of the AlphaTauri riders were able to make it through the second part of qualifying, despite a slew of technical innovations prepared by the team for the British stage. There is still a small chance of rain on Sunday and the team hopes that if the race is held in mixed weather there is a chance of moving up to higher positions.

Yuki Tsunoda (17th): “We were again very close to qualifying for the second part of qualifying, but I didn’t make it, so I’m disappointed. However, I am satisfied with my work.

Track conditions improved quickly and the tarmac was almost dry by the end of the session. The team had good tactics and in the 3rd practice session we had time to try many settings to find an approach for technical innovations, and the car made a more pleasant impression compared to Friday.

I’ve already driven more confidently on those parts of the track where you have to rely on the car for everything, especially in slow corners, and it fits more easily in fast corners too – which is what we wanted.

We have some work to do to improve the car, but we are still trying to figure out the behavior of the upgraded AT04. I will try to rebuild and give my best in tomorrow’s race to get the best out of the car and move up to higher positions.”

Nick deVries (19th): “Qualifying was very difficult, the conditions changed when it started to rain. At the beginning of the first session we managed to do a good circle, but towards the end, when the last decisive attempt came, my tires were very cold.

I didn’t have the confidence to attack as needed, and in the last corner I made a mistake on the brakes, went too wide, which led to a lot of time loss.

During this session we were more competitive, we were able to fight with rivals, so I think the last round should not be considered representative. Perhaps in these changing circumstances we have not been able to put everything together.

Although we worked on a long set of circles in training, we will certainly be hard tomorrow in the race. There are very high speeds in a significant part of the circle, so it is difficult to overtake and keep close behind rivals’ cars. I prefer it to rain – maybe we’ll have some chances then.
