In 2022, the Aston Martin Vantage and the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series will fulfill the role of safety car in Formula 1. In Melbourne, an Aston Martin was deployed as safety car for the first time this season and after the finish, Max Verstappen criticized the British sports car because he was too slow.
Max Verstappen: “It’s hard to believe, but the safety car was driving at the speed of a turtle. In a straight line, it accelerated to just 140 mph, although there were no wrecks on that section. I don’t understand why we drove so slowly.
We have things to sort out, but there is no doubt that Mercedes is a faster safety car thanks to the extra aerodynamic body kit. Aston Martin is very slow. Behind him our tires cool down, so at the restart Charles had understeer. It’s just terrible how slowly we drove behind the safety car.”
Mercedes driver George Russell agrees with Max about the safety car: “We have no problems with the Mercedes safety car – it is about five seconds faster than the Aston Martin. That’s a pretty big difference in speed.”
